Overview
Join Avantis Group as a Project Engineer based at our Head Office in Cardiff with site assignments across Europe. The Project Engineer will support the execution of EPC projects with a primary focus on piping systems, structural steelwork, and fabrication activities. This role combines technical coordination, site support, contractor supervision and assurance of compliance with project specifications, safety standards and quality requirements. The position reports to the Project Manager and offers opportunities to work on complex industrial projects across multiple countries.
Key Responsibilities – Project Engineer

Piping Systems
Review and coordinate piping design drawings including P&IDs, isometrics and general arrangement drawings.
Ensure compliance with project specifications, codes and standards (for example ASME, API).
Monitor fabrication and erection activities for piping systems and verify adherence to design intent.
Coordinate hydrotesting, flushing and pre-commissioning activities and support documentation of results.
Manage material take-offs (MTOs), material delivery checks and ensure correct material usage and traceability.
Resolve technical site issues related to routing, supports, clashes and interface with other disciplines.

Structural Steelwork
Review structural steel drawings, connection details and erection sequences.
Supervise fabrication, welding and installation of structural steel ensuring compliance with project requirements.
Ensure alignment, levelling, bolting and tolerances meet project specifications and support inspection activities.
Coordinate steel erection sequencing with construction teams to maintain safe and efficient progress.
Support welding inspections, NDT activities and follow-up on any non-conformances.

Fabrication & Workshop Coordination
Monitor fabrication progress in workshops and verify compliance with approved WPS/PQR procedures.
Review inspection reports, quality documentation and material test records to ensure traceability.
Coordinate Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), material inspections and supplier quality activities.
Ensure correct documentation control and maintenance of as-built records for fabricated items.

Construction & Site Coordination
Provide day-to-day engineering support to construction teams and field personnel.
Interface with subcontractors, suppliers and vendors to resolve technical and logistical issues.
Participate in toolbox talks, site safety meetings and promote a strong safety culture on site.
Support commissioning and mechanical completion processes and assist with punch list clearance and handover documentation.

Project Controls & Documentation
Track engineering and fabrication progress and contribute to regular project reporting.
Support schedule monitoring, cost awareness and change management including variation orders.
Maintain technical documentation, as-built records and ensure timely issuance of drawings and revisions.
Essential Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Minimum 5 years’ proven experience on EPC projects with hands-on exposure to piping fabrication and erection, and structural steel fabrication and installation.

Experience in welding inspection and QA/QC processes, including familiarity with WPS/PQR and NDT methods.

Previous work within industrial plants, oil & gas facilities, power plants or heavy construction environments is preferred.

Proficiency in MS Office and experience with scheduling software such as Primavera P6 or MS Project.
Technical Knowledge
Familiarity with piping codes and standards (for example ASME B31.3 / B31.1) and relevant API standards.
Understanding of structural steel codes (for example AISC / Eurocode) and connection detailing.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings and GA drawings.
Knowledge of welding procedures, NDT methods and inspection test plans (ITPs) plus material traceability.
Key Competencies
Strong site coordination and contractor management skills.
Practical, solution-focused technical problem-solving capability.
Solid understanding of fabrication processes and construction sequencing.
Commitment to quality, safety and compliance with the ability to promote these on site.
Effective written and verbal communication skills in English for multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
Preferred Skills
Experience in brownfield modifications and shutdown activities.
Familiarity with 3D model review tools such as Navisworks or PDMS.
CSWIP or equivalent welding inspection certification is an advantage.
